Tending to unruly body hair can be tricky and time-consuming, which can mean putting it off. Fortunately, there are now plenty of multipurpose tools available on the market to deal with it. The best body groomers are ready to serve all hair removal needs, from styling beards to trimming body hair.

The Good Housekeeping Institute recruited a panel of hairy men to help them find the top do-it-all tools you can buy. Whether you're looking for yourself, or searching for a practical gift idea, here are our top picks at a glance:

Our experts recruited a panel of 225 men to help them find the best body groomers, asking them to use them for a minimum of two weeks before giving detailed feedback on ease of use, design and, of course, how well they tackled body hair.

You can find more detail on how we test below our reviews, but first, these are the tools that came out on top.

How we test body groomers

best dishwashers

We asked 225 testers to try a range of body groomers over a two-week period, to help us find the best at tackling hair from head to toe. They judged each gadget on how easy it was to use, the quality of any attachments, its overall design and comfort and its performance, both when trimming and shaving body hair.

Back at the Good Housekeeping Institute, our experts used a noise meter to give each device a rating out of five, based on how loud it was (because you might not want to wake the whole house when you're trimming your chest hair in the morning). We then collated all the feedback and scores to find our winners.

Why trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

best dishwashers

In search of the very best, the Good Housekeeping Institute has been testing products for over 100 years, including top beauty buys, from the best hair straighteners to the best hair dryers.

Our beauty and grooming testing manager, Maria Kumar, has worked as a formulation scientist for beauty brands and also has a cosmetic science diploma, so she knows what to look for in a hardworking beauty product. For body groomers, she set the protocols we test against, ensuring unbiased reviews you can trust.

Our lifestyle writer, Madeleine Evans, then analysed our panellists’ feedback to create her reviews. She doesn’t have a particularly hairy chest herself but asked her boyfriend to try out a few of our winning tools for some extra first-person insight.

Can you use a beard trimmer for body hair?

For obvious reasons, using the same shaving tool for your face, body and pubic hair wouldn't be the most hygienic. Thankfully, most modern body groomers come with beard trimming attachments – a different head and different blade that simply clicks into place.

Body groomers are also designed to be gentler on skin, making them safer to use on delicate areas such as the armpits and groin. They also tend to come with a variety of angled blades and multi-length clippers for the most precise finish possible.

How to choose a body groomer

Firstly, consider what your chosen body groomer will be used for, as not all models cater for all zones of the body. Check the list of included attachments, so you know it will be up for the job.

Battery life is another important factor – you don't want to run out of charge mid-hair removal. Rechargeable devices are not only handy while travelling but they also tend to be more powerful than battery-operated options, meaning you can groom your whole body quickly and effectively in one go.

If shower shaves are on the cards, check that your favoured model is reliably waterproof. Wet grooming sessions are cleaner as the debris washes away immediately.

How do I maintain my beard?

The actual trimming and shaping of your chin hair is one thing, but maintenance is also key to keeping your beard in top notch condition. There are a few things you can do before and after trimming your facial hair to keep it looking fresh. Beforehand, we’d recommend giving it a good wash to remove any excess oil or debris (read: crumbs).

Make sure you’re getting deep into the hair; we suggest using your fingers to give your face a light exfoliation at the same time. You can use a regular facial cleanser to create a nice lather and give an extra deep clean.

After a good wash and trim, applying the best beard oil will help with styling and add some extra shine. Containing soothing ingredients such as aloe vera and castor seed oil, they will keep strays in check and help condition the skin underneath.

The verdict on the best body groomers

best dishwashers

Scoring almost full marks on test, the Gillette Intimate Trimmer left little room for complaint. It won for its ability to quickly and easily get rid of body hair. Which is exactly what you want.

Gillette also proved itself as an industry leader with the all-purpose Gillette Proglide Styler, which was our best value face and body groomer. It’s less than £30 but put in an excellent performance, thanks to its long-lasting battery life and ability to trim those hard-to-reach areas.

Want to stay trimmed on your trips away? Then the five hours of battery time you get with the BaByliss Super-X Metal Series 15 Multi Trimmer will carry you through your holiday.
