What is The Lowdown about?

The eight-part series is set in Tusla, Oklahoma, and stars Ethan Hawke as Lee Raybon, a journalist whose obsession with the truth is constantly getting him in trouble. Lee has built a vibrant community in the rare bookshop he lives and works in - and where he’s fiercely committed to exposing corruption in the city.

That dedication to sleuthing has pulled him into Tulsa’s dark underworld - and that's where the drama really starts. There's also drama at home; while his 14-year-old daughter Francis (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) has inherited his love of solving mysteries and wants to join his adventures - much to the exasperation of his ex, Samantha (Kaniehtiio Horn).

Disney+'s official synopsis continues: “When the publication of Lee’s latest exposé - a deep dive into the powerful Washberg family - is immediately followed by the suspicious suicide of Dale Washberg (Tim Blake Nelson), the black sheep of the family, Lee knows he’s stumbled onto something big.”

Lee follows a trail of breadcrumbs deliberately left behind by Dale, only to find that some powerful forces-that-be want to keep Lee from his detective work. Marty (Keith David), who has been hired by political candidate Donald Washberg (Kyle MacLachlan) arrives on the scene, and seems curiously interested in the whole investigation…

There’s an intriguing real-life element to the series, too, as it’s loosely based on the life of American public historian Lee Roy Chapman, inspiring the drama’s own “truthstorian” Lee. Need more reasons to add it to your watchlist? It's also packed with big stars, with the likes of Kyle MacLachlan and Peter Dinklage also featuring, and it’s been created by Reservation Dogs’ Sterlin Harjo.
