The Guest
We just can’t get enough of Eve Myles, and her new BBC drama, The Guest, is only going to cement that fact. The four-part series sees an intense friendship between business owner, Fran (Myles), and her employee, Ria (Gabrielle Creevy), turn increasingly manipulative – and ultimately, dangerous. When Ria starts cleaning for Fran, she’s somewhat intoxicated by her, but when Fran’s advice leads to a shocking event, the lives of these two very different women become intertwined by shared secrets. Expect to be instantly hooked. Available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from 9pm on Monday 1st September.
What to read next
I Fought the Law
At last, Sheridan Smith is back on our screens! Proving once again how skilled she is at portraying real-life stories, I Fought the Law sees her step into the shoes of double jeaopardy campaigner Ann Ming whose story will seriously astound - and move - you. Based on Ann’s 2008 book, For the Love of Julie, the drama recounts the mother-of-three’s 15-year battle to ensure her daughter’s murderer finally faced justice, having been acquitted following two mistrials. Read our interview with Sheridan about the series here. Available to watch on ITV1 and ITVX from Sunday 31st August.
Slow Horses
We’ve been waiting far too long for this one and, at last, Slow Horses is back. Starring the recently knighted Sir Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, series 7 will see more of Lamb’s brilliant scathing put-downs towards his crew of disgraced agents at Slough House. This time round, Lamb and co are on the hunt to find and neutralise a mole in the heart of British government before they can bring down the state. In other words, they've got quite the challenge on their hands. Series 5 will be available to watch on Apple TV+ from Wednesday 24th September.
Only Murders in the Building
Disney+'s standout crime dramedy is back with a star-studded fifth series, which includes, wait for it, Renée Zellweger! If you're not familiar, the series features Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short as New York neighbours (Charles-Haden, Mabel and Oliver) who set up a podcast and set about solving murder cases, following a succession of suspicious murders in the upscale apartment block (know as the Arconia) where they all live. Series 5 will likely pick up on the cliffhanger of another body being found at the Arconia at the end of series 4. Co-showrunner John Hoffman has also it will reflect on some current events in New York that the production team didn’t realise would actually be so true to life. Intriguing! Available to watch on Disney+ from Tuesday 9th September.
Task
Sky’s sparkling new crime drama stars Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent with a major investigation - and an even bigger moral dilemma - on his hands. Set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, the series follows him as he heads up a Task Force to put an end to a string of violent robberies – only it turns out, the crimes are led by a seemingly mild-mannered family man who’s hiding a desperate double life. If you're a crime drama fan, it's one that absolutely should not be missed. Available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW from Monday 8th September.
The Girlfriend
Imagine if your child brought home a spouse who made you feel slightly uneasy. That’s the unsettling situation the mother, played by Robin Wright, in Prime Video’s new psychological drama, The Girlfriend, finds herself in. The six-part series sees Laura’s (Wright) world blown apart when her precious only son, Daniel (Davidson), brings home Cherry (Olivia Cooke). Laura grows convinced that Cherry isn’t who she says she is – but is Cherry a manipulative social climber? Or is Laura paranoid and possessive? Prepare to watch with bated breath. Available to watch on Prime Video from Wednesday 10th September.
The Morning Show
Workplace dramas don’t get much better than Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and, thankfully, the wait is almost over for the fourth instalment. Series 4 picks up nearly two years after the events of the third series - it's now spring 2024, the network merger is finally complete and in typical The Morning Show fashion, we'll see the newsroom, including Jennifer Aniston's Alex Levy and Reese Witherspoon's Bradley Jackson, grappling with topics that feel scarily relatable to our present day reality. Think conspiracies, deepfakes and corporate cover-ups. Series 4 will be available to watch on Apple TV+ from Wednesday 17th September.
House of Guinness
Fancy getting embroiled in a bit of family drama? There’s plenty to be found in Netflix’s new Succession-esque series from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Set in 19th-century Dublin and New York, the eight-partner tells the true-ish story of the Guinness Family - i.e. the family behind the famous Irish brewery - and reimagines the period immediately following the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, the man responsible for the Guinness brewery’s storming success. Covering the impact of his will on the fate of his four adult children, as well as on a group of Dublin characters who work and interact with the phenomenon that is Guinness, we can’t wait to dive right in! Available to watch on Netflix from Thursday 25th September.
Wayward
The deliciously dark storyline of Netflix’s upcoming thriller is set to have us all transfixed - and a little terrified. Toni Collette is a headmistress at a school in Oregon called Tall Pines – but Tall Pines isn’t your typical school. It’s a "therapeutic" school for "troubled teens" that, as Toni Collette’s character, Leanne, says in the creepy trailer will "solve the problem of adolescence." Tune in to find out exactly what she means. Available to watch on Netflix from Thursday 25th September.
