There’s a small chance you might have heard that music star Taylor Swift has just become engaged to her NFL (National Football League) player boyfriend, Travis Kelce. As the news dropped (via joint Instagram post – very millennial of them), the world erupted into excitement and congratulations, with fans poring over every detail of the proposal.

Of course, as with any engagement, everyone’s eyes were drawn to one very sparkly detail – the ring. Thankfully, Taylor and Travis didn’t keep people guessing, sharing a shot of her diamond as part of their engagement announcement. And what a ring it is.

‘Taylor Swift’s engagement ring appears to be an eight-carat elongated cushion cut, set in rose or yellow gold,’ says Tobias Kormind, Managing Director of 77 Diamonds. ‘The elongated old mine-cut cushion has a timeless quality which dates back to the 1700s. Paired with the gold it carries a distinctive romantic, old-time character.’

'This ring feels as though it could hold a story of its own'

Travis is said to have designed the ring for his now-finance personally, but what does the choice say about the current trend for engagement rings among celebrities and the public alike?

According to Austen & Blake’s regional sales manager, James Harris, the cut of Taylor’s stone, ‘encapsulates the popularity of more elongated or oval-shaped diamonds among celebrities and our customer base alike. Round and oval shapes reigned supreme this year according to our 2025 engagement ring report, showing that these were our best-selling stones.’

But Taylor’s ring is more than just an oval shape, and has ‘a clear vintage feel to it,’ says Tobias. ‘This is accentuated by the fact her diamond is an old mine cut, that is – a diamond that is cut in the antique style (that favours more candlelight instead of electric light).’

Antique-style jewellery also carries a sense of history and memory, believes Zack Stone, of UK jeweller Steven Stone. ‘Just as Taylor infuses nostalgia and storytelling into her lyrics, this ring feels as though it could hold a story of its own,' he says. ‘A symbolic treasure for someone who values meaning as much as beauty.’

James Harris agrees: ‘We are noticing rings with antique detailing or engraving like Taylor’s have made a comeback in recent years, and hers has the potential to blow up this trend.’

Part of the trend, therefore, appears to be incorporating something which feels original and unique into the ring choice or design – which a vintage look can aid. Actress Zendaya’s engagement ring (Spiderman’s Tom Holland proposed to her earlier this year), for example, also has an individual and vintage feel.

'High-profile engagement rings almost always influence jewellery trends'

‘Zendaya’s ring is placed in an east-west ring setting that calls back to Georgian design,’ says Tobias. ‘I would say Taylor’s ring also stands apart, in a way that’s definitely on trend for celebrity taste-makers right now.’

Zack Stone predicts that Taylor’s ring will spur a spike of interest in rings with similar design details, from couples getting engaged going forward.

‘High-profile engagement rings like Taylor Swift’s almost always influence jewellery trends, and hers has a lot of elements that are very “copy-able” for everyday buyers,’ Zack says. ‘Ovals may have reigned supreme in recent years, but Taylor’s elongated cushion cut could ignite a fresh wave of interest in this vintage-leaning style.’
