Waffles can be spotted in some guise or other in most food markets – on sticks, as bubbly wraps, loaded with fried chicken or doused in sweet confections. We’re keeping ours classic, and all the more delicious for it.
Step 1Preheat oven to 140°C (120°C fan) mark 1 and place a large baking tray inside topped with a wire rack.
Step 2In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, sugar and a large pinch of salt. Whisk in the eggs, milk and melted butter to make a smooth batter. Leave to rest while you heat up your waffle maker according to instructions.
Step 3Scoop a ladleful of batter into centre of each waffle grid; enough to just cover. Close lid and cook for 6-8min until crisp and golden. Transfer to the rack in oven to keep warm. Cook remaining waffles.
Step 4Meanwhile, make the chocolate sauce. Melt all the ingredients together gently in a pan over a low heat until combined.
Step 5Serve warm waffles with ice cream, chocolate sauce, squirty cream and sprinkles, if you like.
