Yes, double denim is back - and M&S has the key two piece you need to nail the controversial style

If the thought of double denim still conjures memories of offbeat noughties fashion, you’re not alone. But in a stylish twist for 2025, the look has made a controversial comeback - shedding its dated, frumpy reputation to become something far more polished, chic, and easy to wear.

That said, double denim has always had an unorthodox edge. Case in point: Bing Crosby, who was famously refused entry to a Vancouver hotel in the 50s for wearing head to toe denim. Famous jean retailer Levi’s responded by designing him a custom denim suit, complete with a label dubbing it a ‘Canadian Tuxedo’: a phrase you’ve likely heard before.

Fast forward to 2025, and Marks & Spencer is leading the charge with a fresh, modern take. Their latest offering? A dark indigo two piece comprising a fitted shirt with subtle Western-inspired stitching and pockets, teamed with flared jeans in the same rich wash. Both pieces belong to the M&S Autograph collection - a line we at GH have a soft spot for - and are made with good quality cotton for a comfortable, easy fit.

But that’s not all. Elsewhere, other brands are offering similar styles in equally rich, deep indigo hues. Albaray, for example, has an excellent deep denim two piece consisting of a tapered barrel leg jean (the season's go-to jean silhouette) and a button up denim jacket, while Boden takes a far more tailored approach with its twill waistcoat and trouser two piece.

If lighter denim hues are more your style, look to Mint Velvet for a comfortable version courtesy of its elasticated and tie waist band. British brand Damson Madder also offers a light blue version with check detailing, complete with a peplum hem bandeau top for a frivolous take. Instead, for something different, Levi’s offers an ecru white two piece, but make sure you take care when eating due to staining.

Now for the skirts. If an A-line midi skirt is typically your calling, perhaps choose Whistles’ western style Suzana two piece. Alternatively, Ba&sh’s two piece offers a slightly swishier maxi, complete with (wait for it) pockets!
