Wear sun protection
You’ve heard it before, but we’ll say it again – an SPF really is the best anti-ageing cream you can buy. Says Dr Frances Prenna Jones, ‘You can have the best genes in the world, but if you sunbathe you’ll age much faster than someone who may not be as blessed in the gene department but who makes a conscious effort to look after themselves.’ Make applying an SPF part of your morning routine like brushing your teeth.

Avoid heavy, matte makeup coverage
‘There’s a general perception that shine is bad,’ says cosmetic dermatologist Dr Sam Bunting, ‘But skin looks its best when it’s dewy and glowing, with a slight sheen.’ That’s why she suggests avoiding heavy foundations and powder, saying it’s also very ageing. Use blotting papers instead or just keep to light powder in the t-zone.

Curb a sweet tooth
We know sugars affect skin by looking at people with diabetes, whose skin ages much more quickly. Sugars bind with protein , causing damage to our collagen and so accelerate lines and wrinkles. It’s hard to cut sugar out completely, but nutritionist Vicki Edgson suggests you start by cutting out fizzy drinks and sugar in tea or coffee and then take it from there. Cinnamon is great for reducing sugar cravings she says, and is also anti-inflammatory. Chronic inflammation is also linked to ageing of the skin.

Eat fat
‘Skin needs fat to stay healthy,’ says Dr Stefanie Williams, medical Director of European dermatology London. She converted to a low-sugar, low-starch diet, high in ‘good’ fats such as avocados, oily fish, olive oil and nuts and says, ‘My skin looks plumper and more radiant, and my health has improved too.’

Try these makeup must-do’s
Be wary of light reflective particles in concealers as they can draw attention to lines according to makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury. She recommends using a non-reflective brightener, such as her own Retoucher Conceal & Treat Stick, £25, to disguise age spots, wrinkles and dark circles. Another essential: eyelash curlers. Use them before applying mascara. They’re like a push up bra for the eyes and make them look bigger, brighter and wide awake.

Get moving
According to consultant dermatologist Dr Penelope Tympanidis, ‘Women who exercise tend to have better complexions as the circulation throughout their whole body is better. It also improves your endocrinology. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome for example, often find their symptoms are minimised with regular exercise.’
