It’s been quite the hair journey for the Clooneys in 2025, and the latest stop-off point involves Venice and a fresh look for both Amal and George. The power couple have just sailed in for the city’s annual film festival, and we can safely say they’re both having a great hair day.

We’re used to seeing Amal with big, blown-out waves but this week she's swapping her signature Hollywood glam for a more laid-back Venetian look. Perhaps mindful of the wind whipping across the lagoon (the small downside of a speedboat arrival), Amal has gone for a much softer, less structured style… and looks predictably fabulous.

Her usual cascade of curls has made way for a barely-there ‘ghost wave’ look, a look that’s dominated long hair trends in 2025 and shows no sign of knocking off for autumn.

Amal debuted a laid-back look

‘Ghost waves are just the impression of movement in the hair,’ explains hairdresser and trend spotter Tom Smith. ‘Rather than spirals or curls, it’s barely-there S-shaped waves that are really stretched out. It's understated while making a statement.’

Amal's relaxed, brushed-out, ‘hint of a wave’ styling is complemented by an equally subtle balayage, with soft sun-kissed pieces merging seamlessly into her chestnut base colour. It may well be the benefits of spending summer on Lake Como or it may be the work of her hairdresser but it’s hard to tell – which is the entire point.

Lived-in colour is massive at the moment, because people don't want upkeep,’ says celebrity hairdresser Calum Tierney, who says that the ‘seamless blend’ balayage is his most-requested colour right now. ‘People don't get a strong grow-out root, so it’s really low maintenance.’

Speaking of lighter, low-upkeep hair, Amal isn’t the only Clooney working the look. After suffering the indignity of a self-described ‘awful’ black hair dye, the latest photos show that George has completed his return to silver.

George’s dark days with a bad hair dye

Earlier this year, George debuted a rather ghastly dark hair dye for a role on Broadway, a look which was widely derided for its artificial Sharpie-like colour. George took the mockery in good nature, agreeing wholeheartedly with his trolls.

‘I know it’s not good, you never get used to it,’ he said. ‘I started going grey when I was 25, so I’ve been grey most of my life. Nothing makes you look older than being 63 and dyeing your hair.’ Amal was one of the first to snigger at it, George revealed: ‘My wife thinks it’s funny.’

Growing it out has been a work in progress, and even just two months ago there were lingering hints of the dodgy dye job on the top section. Now though, it’s finally fully grown out, and George’s hair has been restored to its full grey glory. No wonder Amal is smiling so much as the pair step into the Venetian spotlight.

Welcome back, Mr Silver Fox. We missed you.
