What are your favorite things about Thanksgiving? There are so many goodies to list: savory turkey, yummy pumpkin pie, exciting football on TV...and Labubu? Believe it!
If you’re a fan of those cute-but-grotesque collectible creatures, get ready for the ultimate holiday treat: Pop Mart, the company behind Labubu, just announced that it will be making its debut at the 99th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which will take place on Thursday, November 27 in New York City. How will Pop Mart participate in one of America’s favorite annual traditions? With a Labubu float, of course!
The Labubu float is called Friendsgiving in POP CITY, and word has it that it’s colorful, joyful, and, above all, fun! It will feature some of the brand's most popular characters, such as SKULLPANDA, Peach Riot, Dimoo, MOLLY, and Duckoo. And of course, no Labubu float would be complete without that dynamic duo LABUBU and MOKOKO along for the ride!
For anyone still not introduced to this worldwide craze: Labubus were created by designer Kasing Lung, who also made children’s picture books. He was inspired by folklore from his childhood in the Netherlands when he invented the magical monsters. The toys are packaged in “blind boxes,” so you don’t know which version of the characters you’re getting. This adds to the fun of buying one—if you can buy one, of course. Labubus sell out constantly, in both Pop Mart’s brick and mortar stores and online. This means that collectors—of which there are tons—have to resort to spending way more than the average price of a Labubu (around $20) on secondary markets like Ebay and StockX. And they do!
The Parade will mark the first time THE MONSTERS (as they're officially called) and their friendly crew have ever appeared in North America in person. Adding to the excitement: a Labubu holiday pop-up shop will also open in November at Macy’s iconic Herald Square store, at 34th Street and 7th Avenue. Right now, just across the street from Macy’s, you can already visit the first-ever SKULLPANDA pop-up. Open from October 20 through the holidays, the immersive experience tells the story of the “You Found Me” series.
The Parade will also merge two amazing histories: Pop Mart is celebrating its 15th anniversary right now, in addition to the 10th anniversary of its legendary Labubu dolls, apparel, and videos. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began in 1924, and is the holiday’s definitive celebration, featuring floats, marching bands, and live performances. The Parade is seen by about 3.5 million spectators in person, and about 50 million TV viewers every year. Imagine how many Labubu collectors will add to those totals this year!
The bottom line: There’s no better time to indulge a love of Labubu than this holiday season. Mark those calendars now for the parade on Thanksgiving morning. (Check local TV listings for times and channels if you can’t get to NYC in person.) And start shopping to secure the Labubu of your dreams right now—demand for Labubu will only increase as the holiday season officially kicks off!
