When I was growing up, family Halloween costumes were rare. Growing up in the '80s, there was just no way that I was ever going to convince my dad to put on a horrible plastic sheet and dress up as a Care Bear or Smurf. Oh, how things have changed. The costumes are better quality, cosplay is mainstream for adults, and everyone wants to dress up.

The only hard part is coming up with an idea that has enough room for everybody. These are the best family Halloween costume ideas for 2025. Some of them pull from movies, TV shows, and other universes with a large number of characters, so everyone can choose their favorites. Others are easy to DIY, so you can decide to do them at the last minute. There are ideas for small crews, like "parent & me" costumes, and some for large groups. All of them have one thing in common: They let everyone in on the fun.
'Inside Out'
There are so many emotions rattling around in Inside Out, and it would be fun to pair up each family member to the appropriate one—or choose based on favorite color: Anxiety has the orange-striped shirt, Embarrassment has the pink hoodie, sadness has the blue turtleneck, and Joy has the yellow dress.
There are lots of different types of dragons in the kingdom of Berk, which means lots of inspiration for costumes. You can buy, or DIY from old sweatshirts like this blogger did. And the parents? They can dress as vikings!
Peppa Pig & George Pig
This one is for all the families who like jumping in muddy puddles! In addition to colorful rain boots and rain jackets, the key to this is making a snout attached to a craft stick so you can hold it up in photos.
With the show wrapping up this year, it might be time to break out the Eggos once more. But for those who don't want to straight-ahead copy a look from the series, this group get-up is a clever combo of the Netflix hit Stranger Things and the Dr. Seuss classic.
Tinned Fish
To turn your family into the trendiest foodstuffs around, just follow these directions.
For the parent:
- Cut two large rectangles from cardboard sheets with a craft knife or box cutter. Round the edges of each corner to create a tin box shape.
- Cut out an opening and two fish heads from the top one-third of one of the cardboard rectangles. Make sure it's large enough for a face to peek through.
- Paint the front and back of each rectangle with a few coats of craft paint and let dry completely.
- Paint details for the “tin” with craft paint. Add googly eyes, cupcake liner scales, and silver pipe cleaners to the fish heads using hot glue.
- Attach a roll of gray paper to the front of the tin, and add a “key” made from more pipe cleaners.
- Secure the two sheets of cardboard together with straps that will rest on shoulders.
- A blue-striped shirt completes the look.
For the little fish:
- Start with a gray hoodie sweatshirt (one with a zipper front will be easiest to wear) and gray leggings. Fold foil cupcake liners in half in shades of silver, blue, and black, then layer the “scales” down the front and back of the hoodie and attach with hot glue, overlapping along the way
- Cut a tail shape from gray felt, and glue to the bottom edge of the hoodie.
- Continue to layer the cupcake liners on the tail, and finish off the fins with silver pipe cleaners attached with hot glue.
- Glue a pair of giant googly eyes to the hood of the sweat shirt and trim with more silver pipe cleaners.
With Beetlejuice Beetlejuice streaming on Netflix and HBO Max, interest in the "bio-exorcist" should be at an all-time high. Make it a goth family affair by dressing as Beetlejuice, Lydia, Adam, Barbara, or Delia.
Crocs
Your shared favorite footwear can become your shared family Halloween costume, personalized by the Jibbitz you choose. To make them:
- On a large sheet of cardboard, trace the outline of a Crocs shoe using a pencil.
- Carefully cut out using an craft knife or box cutter.
- Cut a large hole in the center for the face, and then add seven smaller holes around it to mimic the signature Crocs design.
- Cut an additional cardboard strip and fold in the edges to create a 3D strap.
- Cover the Crocs shape and strap with several coats of craft paint. Allow them to dry completely.
- Attach the folded ends of the strap to the back of the Crocs shoe using hot glue.
- For extra detail, trace the outline of the shoe with a darker or lighter shade of paint.
- Make Jibbitz charms from felt, craft foam, or paper and attach with hot glue.
- Attach backpack-style straps to the back of the shoe with thick ribbon and hot glue for easy wear.
- Wear a yellow sweatshirt or purple sweatshirt underneath with yellow Crocs or purple Crocs to match.
Tye Beanie Babies
Kids love dressing up as something cute, and parents are nostalgic for their Beanie Baby years, making this costume a win-win. To create it:
- Cut ears from felt pieces and attach them to a hoodie using hot glue.
- Make a heart-shaped tag from red cardstock.
- Punch a hole in the heart and thread a red ribbon through so the card can be worn around the neck.
- For an extra authentic look, cover the tag in clear contact paper so it doesn’t "lose value" (Wink, wink!)
- Finish off the look with some oversized, round sunglasses for the eyes.
Oh, it's a jolly holiday with Mary—just not the one you were thinking of! Make Halloween go down in the most delightful way with these Mary Poppins-inspired outfits, which include Bert, a baby penguin costume (and also a doggie penguin, if you have one of those).
Cher and Dionne From 'Clueless'
Clueless is celebrating it's 30th anniversary this year, so there's no better time to break out the plaid skirts and shrunken cardigans and nod to '90s fashions. This is perfect for sisters, or it could make for a fun Mommy & Me costume.

Break out the safari gear and binoculars, because there's plenty of wildlife to see on Halloween! Bonus if you have a baby "cub" to take along with you.
The Great Pumpkin just has to choose your pumpkin patch when he sees this most sincere family Halloween costume. You just need a striped shirt for Linus, a blue dress for Lucy (don't forget that football!) and a yellow shirt for Charlie Brown.

Not surprisingly, the cleaning experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute give this costume two thumbs up. Though this DIY costume is a bit more involved than purchasing a few closet staples on Amazon, if you're into crafting, you should have no problems.
Here's a step-by-step guide:
- Use upcycled items you might already have at home! Start with a large square cardboard box, roughly 20” x 20”.
- Fold a top flap in half to create the control panel, and secure with hot glue. Cut neck and arm holes with a box cutter or x-acto blade.
- Paint the box white and let dry. Add bottle caps and lids for buttons and knobs with hot glue. You can also print images of control panel elements or draw by hand.
- For the washer, use a clear takeout container lid and some fabric scraps glued onto the front of the box. For the dryer, cut a square of painted cardboard and attach it to make a door.
- Accessorize your look with detergent bottles, dryer sheets, and extra laundry!
Easy as can be, but still full of fright, matching skeleton outfits are the best last-minute family Halloween costume. The skull candy buckets really complete the look.
Take your love of Stanley Cups to the next level — and get the kids involved! Purchase a monochromatic loungewear set (or use an old one you already have), print out the Stanley logo for an iron-on patch and iron it onto your sweatshirt, and construct the lid and straw by gluing together a white paper plate and white paper towel roll. Rinse and repeat for the kids. Easy peasy, and oh-so cute.
