You don't need us to tell you that a lot changes when you're pregnant — including how clothes fit. Sure, you might be able to get away with wearing your favorite jeans, dresses and bathing suits for the first trimester or so, but eventually you'll be more comfortable in clothing specifically designed for pregnancy. And if you plan to go to the beach or pool while pregnant, a maternity swimsuit is a worthwhile investment so you and your baby-to-be can enjoy the sand and surf.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we know a thing or two about both maternity clothes and swimsuits. Our Lab pros evaluate all types of clothing and accessories for parents and parents-to-be, from maternity leggings and maternity workout clothes to nursing bras to diaper bags and more. We also regularly all types of swimwear, from top bathing suits for large busts to the best-selling Amazon swimsuits to highly-rated bathing suit brands for older women and more.

When we seek out the best maternity clothes, whether the best swimsuit brands or comfy maternity jeans, our fiber scientists and product experts consider factors like materials, special features built into the garments and overall value. We also consider care, versatility and even the brands' return policies. We lean on real-user feedback from consumer testers who have little ones on the way, GH analysts with babies of their own and online reviews.

Keep reading to learn all about how we choose the best maternity swimsuits, as well as a helpful shopping guide and a few of the most frequently asked questions about this type of garment.

Pros

  • Can be adjusted throughout pregnancy
  • Soft, high-quality fabric

Cons

  • Some users say the design is too basic

Summersalt makes wildly popular swimsuits that regularly receive great feedback from people of all body types, ages and sizes, making them our top overall swimwear brand. Our editors and panelists haven’t worn this particular maternity style, but analyst Amanda Constantine has seen it in action and can attest to its quality.

It’s made of soft and stretchy material to accommodate growing baby bumps and can be adjusted with the drawcord cinch details to help you nail the perfect fit throughout your entire pregnancy. Reviewers rave about the fit and remark on the suit's functionality but say the overall aesthetic is a bit basic. On the plus side, the suit comes in two go-with-anything colors: navy and black.

Our GH analysts and contributors have worn dozens of finds from Old Navy during their own pregnancies, noting that the clothes are super comfy and last for years of regular use.

This one-piece bathing suit has functional design details like shirred sides for a flexible fit through all three trimesters. As a nice touch, it also boasts UPF 40 sun protection and we love the playful blue-and-white-striped design. Best One-Piece Maternity Swimsuit

CUPSHE Maternity One-Piece Bathing Suit

Maternity One-Piece Bathing Suit

Pros

  • Great design details
  • Comfy yet compressive fabric

Cons

  • May not hold up well in the washing machine

We've always been impressed by Cupshe's wide range of flattering styles, all made with compressive materials that are designed to feel comfy. The brand is one of our top picks for postpartum moms for this very reason, but it's a go-to among pregnant contributors we polled too.

This highly-rated maternity-specific suit has ruched sides that allow it to stretch through a full pregnancy but also wins style points for its deep, ruffled V-neck and strappy tie-back. Although the bathing suit is technically machine-washable, one contributor says that you're better off hand-washing anything from Cupshe, as she experienced premature wear, like stretching, by sending hers for a spin.

This suit features a full over-the-bump panel with ruched sides, so it won't dig into your belly. A supportive cross-back top is gentle on tender breasts. PinkBlush Ruched Sides Front Cutout Maternity One Piece Swimsuit

Ruched Sides Front Cutout Maternity One Piece Swimsuit

Pros

  • Comes in seven colors
  • Adjustable straps help you get a better fit

Cons

  • Popular sizes sell out quickly

Like most of the pregnant women we polled, our GH analysts love PinkBlush for its large selection of quality maternity wear, including swimsuits. The retailer expertly marries function and fashion, so shoppers can score something that looks great and feels comfortable. One of our contributors says everything she's owned lasted through multiple pregnancies.

This bestseller is a great example of what PinkBlush offers. The solid-tone one-piece features a flattering V-neck and a front and back cutout for style points. Adjustable straps and ruched sides make for a better fit. We love that it comes in seven colors too. Fair warning: Jump quickly if you see something you love because the brand tends to sell out of the more popular sizes.

Pros

  • Buttons make nursing easier postpartum
  • Wide range of colors

Cons

  • Runs small

Budget-friendly, stylish and available in an impressive 24 colors, it's easy to see why this suit by popular Amazon brand Summer Mae is a top-seller. The suit has unique button detailing at the chest that doesn't just look good — it's clutch for nursing once the baby arrives. Of course, the ruching on the sides also helps accommodate a growing belly. Our analysts haven't tried this particular style, but reviewers rave about both aesthetics and comfort. On the downside, it does seem to run a full size small, so we recommend heeding reviewer advice and sizing up.

Pros

  • Can be worn three ways
  • Can be worn post-pregnancy

Cons

  • On the expensive side

A swimsuit dress provides a little bit more coverage than your average bathing suit. Seraphine is loved by celebrities, members of the royal family and GH analysts alike for its collection of flattering styles that fit well and feel comfortable. Offerings — this suit included — are on the more expensive side but are high-quality and typically versatile enough to wear post-pregnancy, providing more bang for your buck. We love that this swim dress can be worn in three ways: as a traditional swim dress, cinched on one side to mimic a tankini or cinched on both sides to look more like a traditional one-piece.

Best Maternity Swimsuit for Lap Swimming

EQ Swimwear Harmony Maternity Suit

Harmony Maternity Suit

Pros

  • Comes in 10 colors and patterns
  • Won't sag while exercising

Cons

  • Not the most stylish

Swimming laps is one of the gentlest forms of exercise making it great for pregnant women. But your average swimsuit isn't necessarily the best choice for this kind of workout, even for those swimming at a slow pace. Swimsuits for lap swimming are generally stretchy, comfortable one-piece suits with thick straps and modest back and leg cuts, like this one, which comes highly recommended on Reddit.

The nylon and spandex suit, available in 10 colors and patterns, has the same traditional pull-on, cross-backed design as your average practice suit. It's not necessarily the most stylish look, but it's built with durability in mind. The swimsuit is fully lined in both the front and the back, so it won't sag or drag while swimming, and it's quick-drying for comfort post-workout.

Best Plus-Size Maternity Bathing Suit

Swim 365 Longer-Length Tankini Top

Longer-Length Tankini Top

Pros

  • Comes in 15 colors and patterns
  • A highly versatile option that can be worn beyond pregnancy

Cons

  • Not specifically designed for pregnancy

It's not maternity-specific, but this tankini is a great option for pregnancy, because of the extra length in the top. All of that drapey fabric provides plenty of room for a growing baby bump, even into your third trimester. The beauty of this? The versatile style will last well beyond any pregnancy, making it a super smart purchase, especially considering the moderate price. At GH, our analysts consider Swimsuits for All to be one of the best retailers for plus-size bathing suits too. A prime example: this tankini comes in sizes up to 40. And it comes in 15 colors and patterns.

Best Designer Maternity Swimsuit

Hunza G Coverage Square Neck Swim Red

Coverage Square Neck Swim Red

Pros

  • A highly versatile option
  • Beautiful color selection

Cons

  • Only available in one size

A lot of pregnant women try to get away with wearing their regular clothes for as long as possible. And while that may be possible with items like flowy dresses, leggings or over-sized T-shirts, swimsuits aren't as forgiving — except those from Hunza G. This luxe suit is beloved by celebrities and influencers for its one-size-fits-most design and super soft, stretchy crinkle fabric. Pregnant women we polled said even the non-maternity version of the suit fit them well into their pregnancy, but did start to get a little snug when the third trimester came around.

Now the brand offers a solution: a maternity version. The one-piece features much of the same design as the original, but offers a little bit of extra growing room in the torso, a more supportive bust and a slightly lower leg line, so you can get through the entire pregnancy in comfort and style. It comes in seven attractive colors, and we particularly like the emerald. It's gorgeous in person.

Pros

  • Budget-friendly prices
  • Stylish designs

Cons

  • Not as durable as others

H&M's bathing suits may not be as high-quality as some other brands' offerings, but they are definitely stylish and affordable. This swimsuit has most of the features you'd hope for too. It's fully lined and has adjustable shoulder straps, cups with removable inserts for both shaping and support and ruching at the sides. Overall, we think this one piece is worth it, especially if you're only planning to wear the suit for a short window of time.

Best Ruffled Maternity Swimsuit

Hatch The Antigua Maillot

The Antigua Maillot

Pros

  • Can be worn multiple ways
  • High-quality, durable construction

Cons

  • Return policy is a bit limiting

Another celebrity favorite, Hatch is a high-end maternity brand that carries luxury clothing, including bathing suits. Most styles — this one included — cost upwards of $100, but if you're willing to splurge, you'll have plenty of fashion-forward essentials to peruse. Our analysts say these bathing suits are a worthy splurge — we've been impressed with the quality of the materials and the durability of the items — and this red suit is a favorite among pregnant women who say both the shape and the color are very flattering.

It has plenty of functional features, too: Adjustable and convertible straps that can crisscross or tie as a halter, a shelf bra for support and gathering at the side seams. On the downside, Hatch's return policy isn't as friendly as others. You only have 30 days after making your purchase, and the brand charges a $10 shipping fee for all returns.

Best Maternity Tankini

GAP Maternity Recycled Swim Tankini Top

Pros

  • Can be worn two ways
  • Stretchy and highly durable fabric

Cons

  • Runs a bit big

Available in three shades, including a very playful Barbie pink, this tankini is a great option for anyone who wants a little bit more coverage. The suits are made of recycled nylon, and the moms we polled said it's exceptionally stretchy and comfortable. We also like the flexibility of the removable tank straps, allowing you to wear the suit as a halter or a strapless style. Sizing is a breeze since you simply choose your pre-pregnancy size, but it's worth noting that some reviewers say the swimsuit runs a bit big. If you're in between sizes, we recommend going with the larger one. And if you have any wiggle room in your purchase window, try to time it to one of GAP's many sales for a great deal.

Most Versatile Maternity Swimsuit

Kindred Bravely Low Rise Maternity & Postpartum Bikini Bottoms

Low Rise Maternity & Postpartum Bikini Bottoms
Credit: Kindred Bravely

Pros

  • Made specifically to wear during pregnancy and postpartum
  • Removable padding in the top

Cons

  • Not sold as a set

One of the biggest complaints about maternity clothes — and especially maternity bathing suits — is that there's such a short window of time in which you'll wear them, so it can be hard to justify the cost. We love this two-piece option from Kindred Bravely because its shelf life is much greater than your average maternity swimsuit. The bottoms are extra stretchy and have a low-rise design that you can wear under your bump while pregnant or at your hips in the fourth trimester. The top, designed by a brand that manufactures some of the most popular nursing bras, is equally functional. It has removable padding and a special crossover design that pulls to the side to make nursing a breeze. Heads up, though: The suit isn't sold as a set, so you have to buy each piece separately.

How we chose the best maternity swimsuits

double line break

Though we haven't formally tested maternity swimsuits, the analysts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab regularly evaluate both bathing suits and maternity clothing of all kinds. During evaluations, analysts consider construction, reviewing the actual fabric, any special features designed for pregnancy and the seams and stitching. Some styles undergo more involved testing in which analysts test properties like stretch recovery and pilling. We also consider care, versatility and even the brands' return policies.

Real user feedback is important, too. In recent years, we've shared maternity clothes and accessories with more than two dozen testers from our panel and GH editors who have babies or little ones on the way. In return, they've provided feedback about their experiences wearing the items, rating factors like overall appearance, function, comfort and fit.

To curate this list of the best maternity swimsuits, we leaned on all of this prior experience, choosing styles from our most tried-and-true maternity brands. The styles featured are all editor and tester favorites or come from popular maternity brands we stand by with overwhelmingly positive online reviews.

What to look for when shopping for the best maternity bathing suits

double line break

When shopping for a maternity bathing suit, here are a few things to consider:

✔️ Style: Bathing suits come in all different styles, from one-pieces and two-pieces to tankinis and swim dresses. Pick a style that you feel comfortable and confident in. If you don’t feel your best in it, it’s not the suit for you.

✔️ Care: Some bathing suits can be machine washed, but many styles are hand-wash only. Though it's a more time-consuming process, hand-washing your swimwear can extend its life.

✔️ Versatility: Think about what activities you plan to do while wearing your swimsuit. Are you a lap swimmer or more of a lounger? Styles with fashionable details like cut-outs and ruffles are better suited for the latter, while more basic and compressive suits are made for the more active set. Some styles offer a happy medium, with stylish details and functional designs like thicker straps or zippers.

✔️ Padding: Swimsuit tops (both bikinis and one-pieces) come in all different styles: underwire, built-in cups, removable cups or totally unlined. It's really a matter of personal preference, but people with larger breasts tend to prefer cups since they offer more support and lift. (Just make sure to take out any removable cups when laundering to prevent them from getting twisted.) It's also worth noting: Pregnant women may want to avoid underwire, especially if they're experiencing any breast tenderness.

✔️ Pregnancy features: Maternity clothes, bathing suits included, are specially designed to fit you as your body changes — and sometimes even postpartum. To make this possible, these garments often have design features like ruching or shirring along the sides of the torso, which leaves extra material that can stretch as your belly grows. You’ll also find swimsuits with drawcords on the sides that you can cinch tighter earlier on in your pregnancy and loosen to better fit your belly as it grows. Some maternity swimsuits are even made to be worn postpartum, with details like clip-down straps or cross-over tops that can be easily unclipped or pulled to the side for nursing.

✔️ Sizing: It can be hard to decide what size to buy when your body is growing and changing so much. To make things easier, pregnancy clothing is designed to mimic your typical pre-pregnancy size. So if you normally wear a size medium, you can usually stick with a medium. But if you're still unsure, check out the brand's maternity sizing chart and compare your body measurements to the brand's measurements to determine the right size for you.

✔️ Return policy: Pay attention to the brand's exchange policy, especially if you want to order a few sizes to find the right fit. Some brands offer free returns; others may charge a fee. Don't forget to check the return time window too.

Can you wear a regular swimsuit while pregnant?

double line break

You can wear a regular swimsuit while pregnant, but it's probably not the most comfortable choice — especially once you enter the second trimester. As your bump grows, it’ll be harder to fit into your regular swimsuit and you may experience uncomfortable pulling and puckering.
