The right mattress can transform your quality of sleep, but sometimes you can't shell out thousands of dollars for a top-of-the-line, luxury bed. Luckily, there are plenty of affordable mattresses on the market that perform just as well as (and sometimes better than) luxury models. You'll just need to find them amongst the masses.

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, our scientists have been testing products for 125 years; we've researched thousands of popular mattresses and reviewed surveys from over 10,000 mattress owners. In the past few years, we've tested over 200 mattresses (ranging from $150 to $10,000) with hundreds of at-home consumer testers to find mattresses worth the purchase.

    Allswell Luxe Hybrid

    Luxe Hybrid
    Credit: Mike Garten

    Pros

    • Hybrid design combines foam and coils
    • High ratings for comfort and support
    • Our survey panel said it's comparable to luxe beds

    Cons

    • Lacks edge support

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Price-conscious shoppers hoping to spend under $500 without sacrificing comfort. In our evaluations, this bed was a favorite amongst younger adults in their 20s. Note that sleepers with larger frames (typically over 250 pounds) should opt for the Extra Firm model.

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: Older shoppers or users with limited mobility may find the edge support and DIY setup unideal.

Mattresses have gotten increasingly more expensive in recent years, but the Allswell Luxe Hybrid continues to impress our testers and survey panelists with its level of quality and affordable price. It stands out for its pillowy yet supportive feel, thanks to its cushiony foam and pocketed coil base, and ships directly to your door, compressed in a box.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Construction: While most affordable mattresses are made of foam or coils, this mattress combines both, which can add to its cost (the average Queen size hybrid mattress in 2023 cost $2,050). The coils are also individually wrapped, which helps with motion isolation. Beyond that, it stands at 12 inches, making it loftier than most affordable beds you'll find.

✔️ Comfort and support: Our panelists who own the Luxe Hybrid bed unanimously agreed that they were happy with their purchase and gave it high ratings for comfort, overall support, and sleep quality. Some even compared the mattress to higher-end beds: One said, "It feels like sleeping on a real, plush hotel mattress but at a fraction of the price."

✔️ Edge support: While the coil base uses reinforced edges, the main complaint testers had was that the edges sunk down more than they expected. As a result, it can be difficult to get in and out if you have mobility issues.

    Pros

    • Comfortable, cushioning memory foam
    • Popular on Amazon
    • Great motion isolation

    Cons

    • May not offer enough support for some

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: This mattress is great for someone who loves the cradling feeling of memory foam. It also comes in several heights, including low-profile options for adjustable bases, trundle beds, or Murphy beds.

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: This pick doesn't have the best edge support, so those who need a sturdy edge to sit on when getting in and out of bed should avoid it.

Zinus is one of the most popular mattress brands on Amazon, and this model has hundreds of thousands of five-star ratings. It's made of memory foam, and panelists liked its no-frills comfort and low price point.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Ultra-conforming foam: Most users liked the medium-firm feel, dubbing it "not too hard and not too soft." While the top layers of foam slowly sink in for maximum cushioning, this makes it feel less responsive, so combination sleepers may have trouble changing positions.

✔️ Comfort: Over 240 members of our tester panel own a Zinus mattress, with the Green Tea Memory Foam option being the most popular model. The brand overall received mixed feedback, but the majority highlighted how the foam conformed to their bodies and praised its comfort and motion isolation.

✔️ Not enough support: While our testers liked how the mattress contoured to their bodies, not all found it sufficient in terms of support. I personally liked sleeping on my side on this bed, but I wished there was more lumbar support when sleeping on my back or stomach.

Note: While the brand says it uses a green tea infusion to keep the mattress fresh and charcoal to absorb moisture, we couldn't validate that in our evaluations, but we still recommend the mattress for its comfort.

    CopperFlex Mattress
    Credit: Good Housekeeping/Jillian Sollazzo

    Pros

    • Copper-infused foam
    • Testers stayed at a comfortable temperature
    • Supportive feel

    Cons

    • May be too firm for some side sleepers

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Hot sleepers who need a mattress with cooling features at a lower price point. While designed for all sleep positions, it performed best for back and stomach sleepers in our tests.

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: Side sleepers with smaller frames; this mattress ran firm in our tests and may not offer enough give.

Cooling mattresses can be expensive, routinely running over $1,000 for a Queen, which makes it difficult for hot sleepers to find an option that doesn't break the bank. We like this one from Brooklyn Bedding. While it isn't as cooling as some high-end styles we've tried, it has features that you'd expect from a premium mattress like zoned support and copper-infused foam. You can upgrade to the hybrid version for an added fee.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Cooling features: The main "cooling" abilities come from the layer of copper-infused foam, which can help pull heat away from your body and dissipate it within the mattress. This won't necessarily give it a "cool-to-the-touch" feel (you can upgrade to the CopperFlex Pro for that), but it's designed to help regulate your body temperature.

✔️ Temperature regulation: Testers reported that they stayed at a comfortable sleeping temperature. One shared, "I love feeling cooler as I sleep and not waking up sweaty."

✔️ Zoned support: Beyond its cooling benefits, this mattress uses a layer of zoned foam, which we rarely see in mattresses this affordable. Testers noticed: One said, "My hip pain has been reduced since using this mattress. I no longer wake up during the night needing to shift into a more comfortable position." Others appreciated the lumbar support and overall sturdy feel, though one side sleepers found it too firm and wished it conformed more to her body.

    Novilla Bliss Mattress

    Pros

    • Pressure-relieving foam
    • Impressive motion isolation
    • High comfort ratings

    Cons

    • Some online reviewers said it doesn't expand to its full height

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Side sleepers looking for a convenient, no-frills option and don't mind a mattress that's not super luxurious

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: Hot sleepers who need a more cooling or breathable mattress.

While some cheaper mattresses may be too firm for side sleepers, this model uses pressure-relieving memory foam to ease tension around the shoulders and hips for better spinal alignment andcomes recommended by tens of thousands of online reviewers.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Design: The all-foam design cradles your hips and shoulders, which is great for side sleepers. Of the four heights, we recommend the 12-inch or 14-inch model if you prefer a softer mattress, as those use the most foam. In comparison, the other models range from medium (10 inches) to medium-firm (6 inches and 8 inches).

✔️ Comfort: Several testers highlighted and comfort, and one told us it "feels like a soft hug." Another described it as "a bit soft but still firm enough that I don’t feel sucked in by the foam." Online reviewers were also impressed that they could sleep soundly without being disturbed by their pets or partners, thanks to the motion isolation.

✔️ Fast delivery & easy setup: Our testers appreciated the convenient shipping and DIY setup process. One said, "it was easy to get through my door, which is a must living in a high-rise apartment." Still, she cautioned that it took longer than she expected to fully expand. An online reviewer also found the bed a bit thin, noting that the mattress didn't fully expand to its advertised 12-inch profile, though it was still comfortable enough for a restful sleep.

    Perfect Sleeper Innerspring Mattress
    Credit: Courtesy of GH Tester

    Pros

    • Trusted brand
    • Customizable options
    • Testers sais it's supportive

    Cons

    • Some respondents said it gets less comfortable over time

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Shoppers looking for a reliable, trustworthy innerspring mattress that they can try in store.

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: Couples who want motion isolation or users looking for a boxed mattress that ships quickly.

This Serta mattress is one of the most popular innerspring mattresses and has consistently received high ratings for its support, comfort and overall value in our surveys. You can choose from a variety of different options including four different firmness levels, three levels of foam, and pillow top options. The brand also offers free threshold shipping (at-the-door drop-off) or white-glove delivery for an added fee.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Customizability: There are a ton of customizable options to create different comfort layers and firmness levels. The Enhanced version adds an extra layer of foam for a “cloud-like” feel.

✔️ Comfort and support: Over 1,900 Serta owners responded to our most recent mattress survey. This particular bed received high ratings from testers and panelists for overall support and comfort. One survey respondent highlighted, "I love the comfort. It supports my body and pressure points, giving a peaceful rest so that I feel recharged in the morning."

✔️ Durability: Some panelists shared that the bed hasn't held up as well as they had hoped (and felt less comfortable over time), but most respondents were happy with their mattress, even after sleeping on it for 10 years. One long-term owner told us, "Buying this mattress was one of the best investments of my life."

Sleepy's By Sealy® Medium Euro Top Mattress
    Credit: Mattress Firm

    Pros

    • Luxurious pillow-top feel
    • Ergonomic, zoned coil system with targeted support
    • Versatile Medium firmness

    Cons

    • Not the best edge support, according to testers

WHO IT'S BEST FOR: Pillow-top lovers and people looking for added pressure relief. The Medium firmness works well for most sleep positions.

WHO SHOULD AVOID IT: Users who prefer a soft or firm mattress or shoppers who prefer to set up their own mattress.

A past Bedding Awards winner, this Euro-top mattress, like a pillow-top mattress, provides extra padding but the top lines up with edges of the mattress for a more uniform appearance. It's got a versatile Medium firmness, and the ergonomic, zoned coil system provides targeted support to your body as you lie down.

HOW IT PERFORMED IN OUR TESTS:

✔️ Comfy pillow top: This mattress’s Euro top has an indulgent feel that'll make you want to stay in bed all day. Best of all, it has a competitive price compared to similar models you'll see both online and in-store.

✔️ Pressure-relieving support: This model features zoned support and excellent pressure relief. Our most recent tester shared that it was so comfortable that she "[couldn't] wait to return to it night after night." She also noted, “I never felt any pressure on my hips or shoulders when lying on my side.”

✔️ Edge support: Because of the tall, cushioning pillow top, our tester found the edge support lacking compared to other innerspring mattresses.

    Other popular affordable mattresses

    double line break

We also tested several other popular mattresses. Here are our thoughts on the (notable) ones that didn't make our top picks:

    • Tuft & Needle's Original Mattress: This is a solid, no-frills mattress that uses a responsive foam along with gel- and graphite-infused layers for cooling. While it's one of our top-tested mattresses, we've seen consistent price increases throughout the years with limited sales. You're best off waiting until Black Friday if you're set on this model.
    • DLX Classic: This is one of the few flippable mattresses you'll find nowadays (with the same firmness level on both sides). We think it's a great value given the design, but with the $1,500 MSRP, it's not the most affordable out there.
    • Bear Original: Another all-foam option, this model didn't stand out in our tests. While it was firm and contoured well to our bodies, the edge support wasn't amazing, and the price point isn't competitive compared to similar foam models.
    • Silk & Snow The S&S Organic Mattress: For someone who prefers an organic mattress or latex over memory foam, Silk & Snow does a great job for $1,000 (for a Queen). Our testers liked the firm support, but latex isn't always the most popular option amongst our tester pool.
    • DreamCloud Hybrid: We've received mixed feedback for this model. While many users found it initially comfortable and dreamy, a good number noticed sagging earlier than expected. Testers also noted it slept warm.
    • Nectar Classic: Like DreamCloud, Nectar has gotten mixed feedback in our surveys. Some users swear by its Classic mattress while others noted longevity issues. A few reported issues contacting customer service.

    How we test cheap mattresses

    double line break

To find the best affordable mattresses in today's oversaturated market, our team of expert scientists and engineers at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab have:

✔️ Researched hundreds of new models each year, reviewing information about materials, construction, special features, brand reputation, customer service and online reviews. Brands with repeated issues in either quality or customer service are eliminated from our recommendations. We've evaluated dozens of mattresses below $1,000 for a Queen and have noticed increasing prices.

✔️ Reevaluated top-tested models on an ongoing basis to ensure the ones we recommend perform as expected, from setup to overall comfort and support, especially if there's been any updates to the design or construction since our last test.

✔️ Surveyed more than 10,000 readers on our GH survey panel, analyzing over 170,000 answers to questions about the mattresses they own.

✔️ Sent over 200 mattresses to hundreds of consumer testers to review at home, both short and long term, in the past few years. We ask our consumer testers to provide their initial thoughts on the bed, their thoughts after sleeping on the mattress for several weeks and their thoughts after an extended period of time (several months to years later!) to learn how mattresses perform with repeated use.

✔️ Reviewed company-provided lab data (especially related to temperature and cooling) and firsthand user experiences from our own tests and surveys. We also consider any claims made to see whether any brands may be overpromising on performance and verify any certifications.

✔️ Leveraged our backgrounds in fiber science, materials engineering and consumer science to assess everything from materials and structure to brand reputation.

✔️ Interviewed dozens of medical professionals and kept up with relevant sleep studies.

✔️ Visited dozens of mattress factories and showrooms, interviewing everyone from CEOs to in-house product experts.

    What we consider

Between our expert analysis, consumer testing, and survey feedback, here are some of the factors we consider when evaluating mattresses:

    • Ordering and delivery: Users (both testers and survey panelists) share whether their mattresses were easy to order and arrived on time, and they note if they experienced any issues or hiccups during the process, along with how the brands worked to resolve them.

    • Setup: Survey panelists let us know their thoughts on the setup process—whether they handled setup themselves or experienced white-glove delivery service. We also inquire whether the mattress takes to its proper shape in a reasonable amount of time.

    • Firmness level: Testers give the mattress a firmness rating, which is important because some brands' claims about firmness don't always match what consumers feel when actually using the beds.
    • Comfort and support: Testers rate overall comfort and support and have the opportunity to share what they experienced while sleeping on the mattress.
    • Temperature regulation: Reviewers rate whether they maintained a comfortable body temperature while sleeping on their mattresses, regardless of the brand's cooling or temperature-regulating claims.

    Good Housekeeping/Jillan Sollazzo
    • Edge support: Our reviewers sit on the perimeter of the bed and share if the mattress sinks under their body weight or if it withstands the added pressure.
    • Sleep quality: We consider whether or not the mattresses affected our reviewers' sleep quality and if they woke up feeling achy or sore. We also ask reviewers to give the mattress an overall satisfaction score and encourage them to compare the mattress they're rating to other beds they've slept on.
    • Additional feedback: Our reviewers have the opportunity to share anything they specifically liked or disliked about the mattress, along with any other thoughts they want to share.

What to look for when shopping for the best cheap mattress

    double line break

What works for one sleeper may not work for another, so there's no one perfect mattress for everyone. Here are a few things to consider when shopping for a cheap mattress:

✔️ Sleep position: You want your spine to achieve neutral alignment while you're sleeping, and different sleep positions require different mattress firmness levels for proper alignment. Stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress, while side sleepers should choose a softer mattress to alleviate pressure around the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers and combination sleepers can opt for a Medium-firmness level, which is stable enough for sleeping on your back or stomach yet plush enough for your shoulders and hips to sink in slightly.

✔️ Body type: Heavier people need firmer beds, so a soft foam bed may not be the best option for someone with a larger frame. Instead, consider beds designed for heavier bodies with firmer foams or hybrid options including supportive coils. Lighter-weight people, on the other hand, will be better served with a softer mattress. Take into account both your weight and sleep position when deciding on the right firmness level.

✔️ Back pain: Those who suffer from back pain can look for a mattress with pressure-relieving foam or a combination of plush foam and coils. Medical experts advise pain sufferers to choose a Medium firmness level because it provides a nice balance of both cushion and support.

✔️ Temperature: If you're a sweaty sleeper, look for a mattress designed to be cooling or temperature-regulating. Memory foam mattresses tend to be dense and absorb heat, so consider a mattress with coils for improved airflow. If you do choose memory foam, look for design features like copper particles, gel-infused foam, or phase-change technology, which can all help to regulate your temperature while you sleep.

✔️ Trial period: It can be hard to tell if a mattress is right for you without trying it out first. Most of our affordable mattress picks are from brands that offer trial periods from 30 to 100 nights, so you can sleep on your new bed before fully committing to it. Just be sure to read through the brand's return policy to see if there are any associated fees and to learn about the actual return process. For instance, some brands will coordinate mattress pick-up for you, but ones that follow Amazon’s return policy can’t be physically returned—only refunded—if opened.

How much should you budget for a mattress?

    double line break

If you're looking for an affordable mattress, you can find lots of good options under $1,000. Some of our picks are even under $300! Plenty of users on our panel said these affordable purchases are still perfectly comfortable. If you're willing to spend $500 to $1,000, these prices are common in the mattress-in-a-box category and usually include more substantial materials on the inside—from a higher coil count for more support to additional layers of foam for pressure relief. They also typically offer free shipping for DIY setup and a free trial period so you can make sure it's a good fit.

There are also many mattresses that cost over $1,000. At this price point, you're likely getting a luxury bed that will last for many years with special features like cooling capabilities or adjustable settings.

Organic mattresses cost more too, because these materials are more expensive to produce. If you're looking for an organic mattress on a budget, we recommend the Silk & Snow's S&S Organic Mattress, which is priced at $1,000 for a Queen (though we often see it discounted to $850).

Can a cheap mattress still be good?

    double line break

Whether you're shopping for the best mattress on a budget for yourself or you're looking to save on a temporary space or guest room, you can certainly find a mattress that performs well for an excellent value, but here are some things you can expect with a more affordable bed:

    • Shorter height and fewer comfort layers: The most noticeable difference is cheaper mattresses are usually shorter than more expensive ones, meaning fewer layers on the inside. Fewer layers may translate to less comfort, especially for someone who struggles with back pain, but you can always add a mattress topper for an easy upgrade.
    • Firmer feel: The reduced number of layers results in a firmer feel, so you should consider your sleep position: Side sleepers need a softer surface and stomach sleepers need something firmer, while back or combo sleepers can be in between.
    • Questionable brands: Sometimes a low price can seem too good to be true, so make sure to buy from a reputable company that can step in if needed. Amazon and Walmart offer affordable mattresses with trustworthy customer service.
    • Low-cost materials: Mattresses can be filled with coils, foam, or a hybrid of both. Spring mattresses may be less comfortable, so we recommend sticking with hybrids or adding a mattress topper. If you're worried about the safety of the foam in cheaper mattresses, check whether it's certified by CertiPUR-US or GreenGuard to ensure there are low levels of off-gassing VOCs.

When is the best time to buy a cheap mattress?

    linebreak

There are plenty of affordable mattresses available on the market year-round, but if you're looking for an even greater deal, check out holiday-specific sales. Tons of brands offer special discounts during major holidays like Labor Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day and July 4th.

Other shopping events like Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Amazon Prime Day are also great times to buy a mattress for less. Oftentimes during these holidays and events, brands offer competitive discounts starting around 10% and running upwards of 40% off for certain mattress models.
